How to Mod GTA V with Universal Modder

To mod GTA V with AI, install Universal Modder in your agent, match ScriptHookV to your exact game build, and have the agent write one small Story Mode .asi plugin that you install, test and remove yourself. A temporary on-screen message triggered by a key is a better first test than a crossover that runs two games at once.

Universal Modder inspects the installation, writes the plugin and plans the checks. A clean compile is only the first gate; the feature still has to run in your game.

Can Universal Modder mod GTA V?

Yes. Universal Modder has a working Windows GTA V Legacy project on the RAGE engine: Minecraft's world composited into GTA through ScriptHookV, ReShade and a Fabric integration. The case study lists its exact versions.

For a smaller gameplay-side project, use a native .asi plugin built on ScriptHookV, which gives plugins access to GTA script native functions and ships an ASI loader. ScriptHookV does not run in GTA Online, so keep every step on this page in Story Mode.

Read what Universal Modder does if you are deciding whether you need an agent workflow or simply want to install an existing mod.

For another hook-based route, Dragon's Dogma 2 starts with REFramework and a small Lua script. The Elden Ring guide shows why an offline native-code project needs its own version and save boundaries. Compare these requirements in the game guide directory before choosing a target; their loaders are not interchangeable.

What you need

PartRequired decision
An owned Windows GTA V installationRecord the edition, storefront, executable path and exact build
A compatible ScriptHookV runtimeMatch the supported patches to the actual game build
An ASI loaderInventory any existing loader before adding or replacing one
A C++ project and build toolsUse the official SDK with MSVC build tools
Your chosen agent with Universal ModderFollow the agent installation guide
Backups and a file manifestPreserve saves, loader files and other mods before any installation

The current ScriptHookV runtime, v3889.0 / 1158.13, supports patches 1.0.3889.0 / 1.0.1158.13. GTA updates can break the runtime, so compare your build with the download page before installing.

Legacy and Enhanced are different targets. ScriptHookV supports Enhanced, though some plugins still need changes (Enhanced announcement). The Minecraft crossover targets Legacy build 3889 and does not support Enhanced. Do not use the crossover's requirements as a universal compatibility table.

ReShade, Minecraft, Java and the two-game bridge are unnecessary for the small plugin proposed here. Add each dependency only when your chosen feature needs it.

Step-by-step

1. Record a clean baseline

Launch the unmodified Story Mode setup and record that it works. Exit the game. Locate the real executable folder and save location, then copy the relevant configuration and saves to a separate backup. List existing .asi files and loader DLLs so you can distinguish your additions later.

Use the tutorial's project record to keep the edition, build, source directory, test save and recovery steps together. If the installation already has several mods, establish a known working baseline before adding another one.

2. Match and install the loader

Download the runtime and SDK from the official ScriptHookV page. Place the runtime beside the game executable as its instructions describe, along with the included ASI loader. Compare those files with what is already present; do not overwrite an unrelated loader blindly. The bundled Native Trainer is an optional plugin, not a requirement for your own feature.

Keep the archive version and a record of exactly which files you added. If the game or launcher rejects the combination, find a supported configuration instead of asking the agent to circumvent that check.

3. Let the agent inspect before generating code

Open a separate source directory in the agent and provide the game information you recorded:

text
Select code
Use Universal Modder to plan one GTA V Story Mode plugin.
Inspect my edition, game build, ScriptHookV runtime, ASI loader and C++ tools.
Use the official SDK and create one key-triggered, temporary text notification.
Avoid save changes, network features, ReShade and unrelated game-file edits.
Show the project files, exact build command and install/remove manifest first.

You can select the code to copy it manually.

The plan should name the actual SDK include/library locations and produce a single plugin artifact. Do not accept invented native function signatures: ask the agent to point to the declarations it found in that SDK.

4. Build a minimal plugin outside the game folder

Have the agent create the project and compile it for the intended Windows target. Keep the build output in the project until you have reviewed the source and resolved build errors. Record the command and output path it actually used; C++ build commands differ by project format and installed tools.

The first feature should have one input, one visible result and no persistent effect. Check that it handles repeated key presses without adding an unbounded number of objects or continuously writing to disk.

5. Verify in Story Mode

With GTA closed, copy only your reviewed plugin artifact into the intended loader location. Start Story Mode yourself. Check the runtime/plugin logs, press the chosen key and confirm the expected message. Repeat the action, return to a normal scene, and check that the game remains responsive.

Then exit, remove only your plugin, and confirm the baseline still launches. Keep shared loader files if another installed mod uses them. One working message covers one feature; test other missions, saves, GPUs and mods as you expand.

Example prompts for GTA V

These are suggested prompts for your own project:

text
Select code
Add a read-only coordinate display to my working Story Mode plugin.
Keep it behind a toggle and update only the display.
Show how I can check the coordinates and remove the feature afterward.

You can select the code to copy it manually.

text
Select code
The plugin builds but my key does nothing in Story Mode.
Check the installed artifact, loader log, entry point and input path in order.
Use the current source and SDK. Propose one diagnostic change at a time.

You can select the code to copy it manually.

If you need help narrowing a larger idea, use the recon and debugging prompts. The CLI reference covers optional investigation and capture tooling around the plugin workflow.

Mods people built for GTA V

Minecraft inside GTA V is the advanced example. It links a Fabric mod, ScriptHookV component and ReShade compositor, exchanging state and image buffers between two running games. It was built on Windows with NVIDIA hardware; on AMD, only part of the feature set has been reproduced.

Study that example for camera and rendering integration once you have a reliable single-game development loop. The case page lists its Legacy-only versions, build tools, limits and checks. It is not the starter plugin described above. Read the full build notes on GitHub.

Known issues and fixes

SymptomFirst check
The loader stops working after a game updateCompare the actual executable build with the runtime's supported patches
The plugin builds but never runsCheck the installed artifact, correct game folder, loader and plugin logs
The feature runs in the wrong installationCompare the launched executable with the directory in your install manifest
A crash begins after adding the pluginRestore the recorded baseline, then reduce your change to the last working feature
A renderer mod conflicts with this setupInventory existing graphics wrappers and consult that mod's own supported route

The crossover's removal script can delete an existing ReShade.ini. If you later try that project, preserve existing renderer configuration and inspect the script before using its removal option. Do not apply that project's cleanup script to an unrelated plugin.

Use general troubleshooting for agent or CLI discovery problems, and read the safety FAQ before you mod a game with online features.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this guide in GTA Online?

No. This guide covers GTA V Story Mode only. ScriptHookV does not work in GTA Online and closes the game when you enter multiplayer; do not try to bypass that.

Does Universal Modder's Minecraft crossover support GTA V Enhanced?

No. The crossover targets GTA V Legacy, Steam build 3889. ScriptHookV itself supports both editions, but check each plugin separately before running it on Enhanced.

Do I need ReShade or Minecraft for a simple GTA plugin?

No. They are parts of the advanced passthrough example. A small ScriptHookV plugin uses the compatible runtime, an ASI loader and its own build requirements.
